2.John Adams, 1797-1801. National security, defining and defending our borders, neutrality, not making alliances with others so that we wouldn’t have to go to war. Alien and sedition acts. Thomas Jefferson 1801-1809. Louisiana purchase. How to interpret the constitution? He usually is strict constructionist but he is loose to purchase Louisiana. Doubled size of united states. Then he explores it. Lewis and clark expedition. Kept us out of war. Embargo and non-intercourse act. New england doesn’t like the embargo act.
James Madison 1809-1817. Not distinguished presidency. Primary author of bill of rights. because he got us into war of 1812, didn’t go too well under him. Nobody won the war of 1812. Victory at new orleans which opened up the west for america. Causes of war of 1812.
