Littering has become a major environmental problem. According to the EPA, people who litter are usually have a lack of knowledge of the environmental effects of littering or they litter because there is a large amount of litter already present at the particular site and that conditions people to think – this is normal. I guess that people who litter don’t even think about what they are doing and its impact. I find that very disappointing.
Just recently I was coming out of a store and saw an old man drop a Hershey’s
Kiss on the ground after unwrapping it. He slowly bent down, picked up the chocolate and left the wrapper in its place. Yet, there was a trash can only five steps in front of him. It surprised me when he popped the soiled piece of chocolate into his mouth and got into his “expensive” Jaguar and drove away. I put the wrapper in the trash but I was pretty close to throwing it at him! I thought to myself -- those are the kind of people that can and should change.
According to the EPA, the average American produces 4.5 pounds of garbage everyday. So it is no surprise that we have serious littering and dumping problems. We don’t get another chance to live life over again or another world to live on. So we should care for our world.
