In a survey of 55 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill students, the following question was asked: “Which of the following statements comes closest to your views on the origin and development of human beings? ”. (Note: exact answer options are detailed in a subsequent paragraph). Of the 55 respondents, 14% believed that God created human beings as they are now within the last 10,000 years, 51% believed that human beings have developed over millions of years with God guiding this process, 33% believed that humans have evolved over millions of years and God had no part in this process, and 2% abstained from answering. Below is a table with the statistics:

Based on the results of this survey and taking into account factors known about the sample, the general population would have a smaller portion of individuals who believed that God had no part in the processes, as compared to our sample of UNC students, and the remaining respondents would be around equally split between believing that God guided the process over millions of years and God created humans as they are in the last 10,000 years. This expectation is based on the fact that UNC students are largely Democrats (also indicated by this survey), which is typically associated with secularism.

Comparing this result to a Gallup Poll taken between May 5th and June 12th, 2012 of 1024 adults in the United States, which read “Which of the following statements comes closest to your views on the origin and development of human beings? (1) Human beings have developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God guided this process. (2) Human beings have developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God had no part in this process. (3) God created human beings pretty much in their present form at one time within the last 10,000 years or so.”, which is the exact wording of the question in the UNC student survey, 32% of respondents believed that the process had been guided by God, 15% believed that God had no part, 46% believed that God had created humans in their present form, and 7% were unsure or did not answer. The margin of error in the poll was ±4%.

We see that that indeed a statistically significant smaller fraction of respondents believed that God had no part in the processes, however we find that the fraction that answered “present form” was not near “guided by God” (even when considering the margin of error).
