My proposition for selling my first ever Mac, my beloved 12" PowerBook G4, to my mom's hairdresser.
read moreI’ve attached the spec sheet for the computer. It outlines all of the hardware and software of the computer that you’re considering buying.
Although I am very excited that you’re interested in buying my computer, after speaking with my Dad he wants me to sell it for a minimum of $900. Both of us have spent a lot of time researching what the computer is likely to sell for on eBay and he feels strongly that I not settle for less than $900.
Given this, my mom & I have a proposal for you to consider:
You can pay me $800 in cash and provide my mom with $100 in haircuts - basically 4 haircuts for either my sister or myself.
You get the computer along with the time it takes me to teach you how to use the various applications, installation of your new iPod, recovery of your songs, lots of new songs, and any other support you need to get started. In addition, I will remain available to you beyond that time should you have any questions about the computer or the applications.
Here’s a list of things that you should consider in your decision:
You Get:
- A fast, compact computer that is no longer available;
- Move to a Mac that is user friendly and a lot less susceptible to virus;
- Get your own personal “apple genius” support;
- Don’t have to pay tax;
- My Dad’s expert help setting up a wireless network at the shop.
I get:
- Don’t have to hassle with eBay and shipping;
- To help you (I like to show people what I know about the computer);
- Visitation rights….
Just Kidding!
Anyway, I’m deeply sorry that I can’t sell it for $750. Really, all that’s different is the change of how we help each other out
By the way, regardless of the computer that you decide on, in order for you to use the internet at work, you’ll need to purchase a router (approx. $40) and sign up for a basic high-speed internet service (approx. $30/month). As noted above, my Dad has offered to help with the installation. I’m sure he’ll even help with suggestions on what router and service to purchase once you’re ready to move forward with making the shop wireless.
First the basics, Why a Mac?
Your toaster doesn't crash. Your kitchen sink doesn’t crash. Why should your computer? Think of the countless hours you would save if your PC worked on your time not the other way around. Then think about a Mac. Macs offer flawless integration of hardware and software, only with a Mac do you get a system built by the same people who make the operating system, the applications, and the computer itself. And The second you turn on your Mac it connects to any wireless network, without having to buy and plug in a chunky wireless card like some other laptops.
iLife 08’
Another major bonus is you can create amazing stuff! iLife 08’ which is virtually a suite of applications, including iPhoto, which helps you organize all of photos which can easily manage up to 20,000 photos. iMovie HD, which provides you with basic editing tools for movies you import from your digital camera, iDVD a tool for creating DVD’s. Garageband an application for recording, editing, and touching up any type of music you might want to record or create from scratch. iTunes, for playing countless hours of music, movies and more. Finally iWeb, for creating and personalizing your very own website. This is just a brief summary of what a few of the applications are.
Professional Writing
I will include Office Mac 2004 and iWork 08’ which is the most recent version of Apples iWork. In my experience Office Mac 2008 which is the most recent version of Microsoft Office for Mac (Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint ect.) does not run very well, but 2004 seems to run flawlessly. With iWork 08’ you can create your own word processing documents, much like you would do using Microsoft Word however Pages (it’s equivalent) does the same thing with style. If you prefer to use the same thing you are used to (likely Microsoft Word) you can use that too, it’s all included!
Your Mail
Apple mail is very easy to use and very elegant, containing all you need to organize the emails you receive regarding your personal life, as well as your work. When you switch to a mac there is no need to change your email, unless you would like too, its very easy to set up your new mac with an existing email address. When you receive a message on your email regarding a date or appointment and view it through apple mail, if you drag the mouse over the date it will recognize that it’s a date and ask if you would like to add it to your calendar. It will do the same thing with a new contact, and you can add it to your contacts. Which is an incredible time saver.
Your Address Book
If you have any existing contacts on your email, or anywhere else in electronic form. You can easily import them into the address book application on your Mac (which I can help you do). If you have just received the phone number or email of a client you can easily add it to their contact in your address book, so that you can call them, email them and more when you need too. If you need to create pocket size address cards you just select the designated names, select print, and choose “pocket size cards” and you can then cut them out! (I remember you asking if you can do that).
Your Calender
Keeping track of appointments on paper can be very hard, especially because when one ends another begins. iCal allows you to keep track of all of your appointments and who’s coming at what time, and even alarm you before one begins! You simply create a new event, name it, punch in the time slot, and even give it an alarm! (I’ll teach you how to do this).
Technical Specifications
Those are just a few of the many application that make your Mac great, these are the technical specifications, please note that the requirements to run a P.C. And a Mac are different (a P.C. Requires more RAM, while a Mac requires less, letting you preform tasks faster):
Processor type = PowerPC G4
Processor Speed = 1.5 GHz
Memory (RAM) = 768 MB
Hard Drive Disk = 250 GB
Operating System = Mac OS X Leopard
Condition = Excellent
Weight = 4.6 Pounds
Screen Size: 12.1 Inches
Extras: I’m including $470 worth of software that was upgraded from the original model, as well as the incase sleeve ($30) that you had seen before, and the 250 GB hard drive is brand new and it costs around $250 as well. The extras are really what would make it sell very high on eBay.
iLife 08’ = $80
iWork 08’ = $80
Leopard = $130
Mac Office = $150
Incase Sleeve = $30
Hard Drive = $250
Total Worth Of Extras included = $720!!!!
A Little More About A Computer:
A processor speed is essentially how many calculations it can do in a certain amount of time. Based on what you need to do on a daily basis, 1.5 GHz is plenty. Memory or RAM is temporary storage the larger amount of RAM you have the more applications you can run at once, mine is just shy of a gigabyte, and once again based on what you would be using it for, it’s plenty. Hard Drive space is the amount of storage you can put on your machine, even today a 250 GB hard drive is huge for a laptop. Most laptops come with 160 GB, a little more than half. You will never have to worry about running out of space on this laptop, your set for life. It’s very hard to explain what an operating system is, so I’ll give you some examples, besides the design it’s the difference between a Mac and a P.C. Leopard is the most recent release of operating systems for Macs. As Vista is the most recent version for P.C.’s. Leopard has a new look, but mainly increases performance all around. My laptops not it mint condition, it does have some bumps and bruises, but nothing that affects the performance.
4.6 pounds is extremely light for any Mac or P.C. Most laptops are at least 5.0 without buying a super light weight one (which is also super expensive). All of these speeds and sizes fit what you would be using if for perfectly, the only reason I’m upgrading is because I do more advanced things that require faster computers. Basic web browsing, mail checking, and appointment making as well as all the fun stuff like listening to music, looking at your photos and more is what this machine was made for.
I’m soooooooooo glad that you might be purchasing my laptop, it would help me out so much without having to post it on eBay and everything. I’m unbelievably thankful. I’m willing to give you as much help as you need to get it started, and any questions that you have along the way I can help you with too.
