As freshman year was coming to a close, I didn't want to get an internship because I didn't want to work for anyone. I wanted to do my own thing (namely continue working on Class Checker), but then an email went to the CS students about a "start your own startup" internship at Shoeboxed, so I decided to email them (I got the internship and enjoyed the people I met there, but getting the product off the ground and using Django fucking sucked). This is when I fell in love with the idea of having my own company that was like ~50 employees in size.

I'm Joe Puccio, a freshman at UNC Chapel Hill planning to double major in math and computer science and I'm interested in being a part of Shoeboxed this summer. Your internship resonated with me because I'm very interested in technology start-ups, especially those that make existing tasks easier through automation, and I've been involved with two tech startups so far this year.
Last fall I created a service called "UNC Class Checker" which notifies users via email or text when a class they're interested in has an available seat (previously, students had to manually refresh a page over the course of a few months to see if there was an opening). As of right now, I'm the only programmer and I run the service with a friend who handles the business side of things. We've had 1700 sign ups, 1500 unique users, and tens of thousands of notifications sent so far. We plan to begin development on our own site this summer (our existing site is hosted on wordpress: http://uncchecker.wordpress.com/) and we have already setup an identical service for NC State students and are pending a launch.
This spring a group of students contacted me about developing a buying/selling/trading website for UNC Chapel Hill students. At the time, I had no experience with web development, but over the course of the following two months I taught myself HTML, CSS, SQL, JavaScript (jQuery and AJAX), and PHP. I simultaneously developed their site, and took a role as co-founder in the company. The site is in beta testing and is still very much in development (basic features need to be added, such as timestamps), but we've had over 300 submissions and the site has steadily increased in activity. The website is called RamsList: http://ramslist.com/ .
I'm also involved with two other internet startups which are both in their infancy, but I'd be happy to provide details.
I'm interested in interning at Shoeboxed because of the flexibility the opportunity offers (which is unmatched by any other summer internship I've seen for this summer), and because I share Shoeboxed's goal of employing technology to reduce redundancy and tediousness in people's lives.
I'm proficient in JavaScript (jQuery and AJAX), PHP, SQL, CSS, HTML, Objective-C, Python, Java, Mathematica, MatLab, Applescript, and Latex.
If you would like me to send you a resume, have any questions, or think I would better fit a different internship position at Shoeboxed, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Thank you for your consideration,
Joe Puccio
